Epee: concentration, accuracy, and speed

The slowest and most calculated of all three weapons, Epee emphasizes purpose and confidence in its practice.

Learn to Fence

Fencing is for everyone, whether you’e a sword nerd, an athlete looking to try something new, an absolute non-athlete, or a child in need of a screen-free hobby.

At Badger Fencing Club, almost all classes follow a two-month cycle. During the last week of each cycle, the coach evaluates each student to determine where you should be in the next cycle.

Class offerings

All classes are offered for youth (ages 8-12), cadets (ages 13-17) and adults (ages 18-88).

Beginner Class

This class is designed for those who are new to fencing, have a small amount of fencing experience, or have not fenced for a long time. We cover the basics of footwork, movement, attacks, and distance. Youth and Cadets use plastic weapons and standard fencing masks, while Adults begin with plastic and transition to steel and full fencing gear partway through the cycle. Students who graduate from this class move to the Intermediate class.

Your session fee covers all the equipment and gear you’ll need for this eight-week course. Attend one, two, or three classes each week for eight weeks.

Intermediate Class

Students in this class continue to practice the skills they learned in the Beginner class but stay longer and add additional blade actions. They learn to defend themselves with parries, make blade-on-blade contact, and employ indirect actions. Everyone in this class uses steel weapons and full fencing gear. Students who graduate from this class move to the Novice class.

Novice Class

In this pre-competitive class, students continue to refine their skills and apply what they’ve learned to actual fencing situations. The skills and games from the previous levels become more complex as they add new tactics and strategies. The goal of this course is to prepare students to be ready to compete at a local event. Students who graduate from this class move to the Competitive class.

Competitive Class

This class focuses on skills, tactics, and strategies useful for competitive fencers. While most who attend the class have completed the Beginner-Intermediate-Novice cycle, experienced competitors can also join with the instructor’s permission. The Competitive class focuses on a theme each week and dives deeply into it as students examine offensive, defensive, and counter-offensive applications at a variety of tempos and distances with varied opponent responses. The goal of this course is to sharpen the fencing skills of those competing at local, regional, or national events.
