Frequently Asked Questions
What is fencing?

Fencing is a combat sport that features sword fighting. The three disciplines of modern fencing are the foil, the épée, and the sabre. Each discipline uses a different kind of blade, and employs its own rules. Most competitive fencers specialise in one discipline. The modern sport became popular near the end of the 19th century and is based on traditional dueling and swordsmanship.  Scoring points in a fencing competition is done by making contact with an opponent, with the target area depending on the discipline. Today, it’s most popularly known as an Olypmpic sport, and sometimes will be referred to as “Olympic” or “sport” fencing, to differentiate itself from other sword based combat sports such as HEMA.

Am I too young/old to start fencing?

We only accept students aged eight and up, however, we have no maximum age. Many successful adult fencers start in their 30s, 40s, even up to 70s and 80s! Fencing is a lifetime sport, so it’s never too late to start!

What equipment do I need to purchase?

Established fencers need to have their own passable gear to participate in any programming. Beginners may use club gear at no additional cost, and will gradually acquire their own personal gear under the supervision of coaches who will ensure correct fit, safety, and compliance with current fencing rules.

Do I need any previous experience?

No experience is required to begin fencing! As long as you’re willing to train hard, we accept students of all levels of experience and athleticism.
